Create Space for Your Projects at Home

Whether you’re diving into a new hobby, launching a business, or pursuing a personal goal, having the right workspace can make all the difference. The space you choose impacts your focus, creativity, and overall productivity. In this post, I’ll guide you through the key steps to setting up an ideal workspace—one that inspires and supports your workflow.

1. Where Is the Right Spot?

This will depend on where you currently are and where you feel your best when working and creating. And those areas might be different! So, when exploring the "right spot," I like to consider multiple places in my home that feel right for focused administrative or business work and hands-on creative work.

  • Consider Your Home Layout- Think about where you’ll be most comfortable and productive. Do you have a dedicated room, a corner in your living space, or a multi-purpose area that can transform into your workspace?

  • Choose the Right Surface- A sturdy table or desk is essential. Consider the type of work you do—will you need extra space for materials, multiple screens, or a minimal setup?

  • Pay Attention to Lighting- Natural light can make a big difference in energy levels. Morning light is great for an energizing start, while warm evening light can help you wind down. If your space lacks natural light, consider soft LED lamps to brighten your workspace.

  • Explore Options Beyond Home- Sometimes, working from home isn’t ideal. A local library, coworking space, or even a friend’s office can provide a fresh environment. (I once used a friend’s office, and it worked wonderfully!)

2. What Decor or Inspiration Can You Add?

When I’m in a highly productive creative season, I like to be surrounded by crafts, color, and visual elements that showcase my creativity front and center. But when I’m in a season of organizing and structuring my work and business efforts, I prefer a more streamlined space with fewer colorful distractions.

Your workspace should be both functional and inspiring by adding personal touches to enhance creativity and motivation while keeping you focused.

  • Incorporate Plants- A little greenery can improve air quality and create a calming atmosphere. If you’re not great with plants, opt for low-maintenance ones like succulents or pothos.

  • Display Your Achievements- Frame a certificate, an inspiring quote, or a piece of work you’re proud of. Seeing tangible reminders of your progress can be incredibly motivating.

  • Choose Accessories That Reflect You- Whether it’s a favorite pen, a stylish desk organizer, or a vision board, surrounding yourself with items that spark joy and productivity can help keep you engaged.

3. How Will You Maintain Organization?

First, it’s totally normal for our creative spaces to get a little messy or unorganized sometimes! The key is having quick and easy cleanup methods in place—like a built-in reset—to keep things flowing smoothly.

A clutter-free space promotes a clear mind. Keeping your workspace organized doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs to work for you.

  • Use Storage Solutions- Rolling carts, containers, or shelving can help keep supplies within reach but out of the way.

  • Find the Right Organization Tools- Some people thrive with physical planners, while others prefer digital task managers. Whether it’s a notebook, a binder, or an app, choose what keeps you on track. (Check out how to make a Home Management Binder)

  • Keep It Simple- The best organization system is one that’s easy to maintain. If it takes too much effort to stay tidy, it won’t stick. Streamline your setup so that tidying up feels effortless.

Creating a space for your projects doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By choosing the right spot, adding inspiration, and keeping things organized, you can design a workspace that supports your goals and creativity.
