Have you asked for a raise? Did you ever feel hesitant to do so? You are among many who think it’s a nerve-wracking proposition. But in this tight job market, you can’t just sit back and assume your wages will continue to creep up over time. If you want to boost your earnings sooner rather than later, it may be time to ask for that raise. Take some time to read this article and take that leap of faith today!
Action item #1: You do need to prepare a bit in advance. First and foremost, write down your accomplishments both big and small. Write it out as many as you can think of. If you have a hard time coming up with a list (because you are a humble person aww), ask your colleagues, re-read the performance reviews from the past, and see if you can find congratulatory or recognition emails from your boss or clients.

Action item #2: After listing your accomplishment, it is time to write that email! You want to sound confident but not cocky, humble but not shy, you also want to maintain a respectful tone throughout the email and not sound too demanding.

Action item #3: Start with how grateful you are for the opportunity at the company and how long you have been there.
· If you were a temp employee and were recently offered a full-time job at the company but at the same rate, this is a good opportunity to ask for a raise. You have more leverage because the company saw value in keeping you.
· If you are relatively new, it’s best to ask for a raise after about 6 months of employment.
· If you have been working at the company for a long time and you have yet to see a raise, take this as a sign to ask for a raise respectfully.
Start listing your accomplishment. Start with major ones that had a positive impact on the team, department, or company. I would list about 3 to 5. If you have done more, don’t hesitate to list more but you don’t want the email to be too long and bore the reader (aka decision maker).
Action item #4: If you don’t have too many achievements to list, write down the things that were mentioned in the performance reviews like the things that exceeded expectations. Also, if you have added responsibilities, mention those!
Action item #5: End the email by saying that you play a key role at the company and that the raise will motivate you continue to put in the best effort. Make sure to include exactly how much you want. You should always ask for a little bit more than your desired amount so there is room to negotiate. Please don’t ask for a crazy amount!
Action item #6: Have others proofread and hit that “send” button!
Action item #7: Be patient for the reply but if you do not hear back in 3 days, follow up by forwarding the same email.

Action item #8: If you get a disappointing response, don’t give up! Make sure you reply back and say that you’d appreciate it if this conversation continued after 1 month, 2 months, or whenever you feel appropriate.
