Have you ever received a gift and thought, “Well, what am I going to do with this?” and then you immediately start thinking about who you can re-gift it to? Yeah, let’s talk about the worst gift you can give to your boss. If you have an awesome boss, you might want to pay attention so you don’t end up gifting him or her with the worst gift. If you have a terrible boss, maybe you should also pay attention so you can get some for them (just kidding! We gotta kill them with love). So if you want to ensure that someone remembers you in the best possible way, read on!
1. The Basics
Let’s start with the basics- Coffee Tumblers and Mugs. Yeah, I am pretty certain you have at least ten of these in your cupboard in various colors and sizes. So if you want one of your gifts to end up in the cupboard, then gift it. Let's stop creating beautiful trash!
2. Gift Cards
This one is a bit tricky. Some people might not mind at all but if you are working for a well-off boss, they might not appreciate this because time is gold for them so they may not be the one doing the shopping. Some people feel embarrassed to use the gift card at the store or a restaurant so just be aware. It could also be perceived as a thoughtless gift.
3. Paid classes like cooking or fitness class
In most paid classes, you have to go to a specific place at a specific time. Once again, your boss might not have that much time to spend on mediocre experiences alongside strangers. This type of experience gift is great for family members and close friends.
4. Food
Unless you know exactly what they like. Stay away from gifting food or drink. If your boss raves about something all the time, the chances are, someone else might have already gifted them!
If you do end up getting food or drink, don’t wrap it too much. It should be obvious that it’s food so they don’t stuff it in their trunk and forget about it for weeks.
In many cases, most appreciated gift isn't bought with money. October 16th is National Boss Appreciation Day. On this day, write them a heartfelt email or a hand written card and express your gratitude for their leadership and mentorship.
This phrase cannot be more truer-It's the thought that counts.
