What to Wear to an Interview: Dress to Impress

Let’s explore the different types of interview outfits that you can wear to an interview.

There are many factors that determine what you should wear to an interview. One of them is your personality and what type of company you are interviewing for. For example, if you are interviewing for a job in a creative or artsy field, it would be appropriate to dress more casually than if you were interviewing for a job in finance or law.

It is also important to consider the culture and environment of the company that you are applying for and whether they have a formal dress code. It is not uncommon for companies in the financial sector to have stricter dress codes than those in other industries.

Dress to impress! Whether you agree or not. People can’t help but to draw a certain judgement on how you look. HR professionals are humans too!

The following are some general guidelines for what to wear to an interview:

  • Dress professionally, but not too formally. Once again, know the culture of the industry you are applying to.
  • A suit or dress pants with a blazer are always safe bets, but if your company is more casual, then jeans and a button-down shirt might work as well.
  • Wear clothes that are clean and pressed. This is a simple advice but it does tell the interviewers whether you were prepared or not. I have seen a lot of guys wear button up shirts that looked like they took it out of their hamper the morning of the interview. It was hard to focus on what they were saying because the shirt was extremely wrinkly and had stains.

  • Dress according to the weather of the day. Why would you wear a thick long coat in summer and sweat profusely during the interview?

  • Avoid wearing anything too bright, obnoxious, or loud. Really bright colors do make interviewers dizzy at times. Loud material clothes tend to take away the attention from the interviewers. Let them remember about you and what you did, NOT how lousy your attire was.

Some people may not want to spend too much on clothing, but it’s important to invest in quality clothes that will last and make you feel confident. It's also a good idea to have a few different outfit options in case the interviewer wants you to come back for another interview.

Good luck everyone!
