When my wife and I decided to move from New York to Iceland, we had big plans.
Both of us were working musicians in New York, but graphic design had become a new passion. She had just finished getting her Masters Degree from Pratt and I was working at a design firm in Brooklyn.
We still loved music, but the steep rent in New York combined with low paying gigs made the end of every month anxiety filled.
So we decided to pack up, move to Iceland (where she’s from) and open our own design studio.
Only, life had other plans. First, even before we landed in Reykjavik we found out she was pregnant. Also the union of graphic designers here had successfully lobbied to make it more difficult to work as a designer without a degree.
At the same time, opportunities in music started opening up for us in Iceland. Soon I realized that the path we thought we were on didn’t exist anymore.
That feeling of being completely lost is why I made this four-part framework I call “The Wayfinder.” It’s a set of journaling prompts that will help you figure out the root causes of the feeling and steer you back on to your creative path.
It’s available as a free download here: https://payhip.com/b/01Adw
Briefly, the four parts are Zooming Out & Zooming In, Looking Backwards, Looking Forwards and Connecting the Old with the New.
I think it’s best to try these multiple times over several sessions to see how your answers evolve. Eventually a picture will begin to emerge that can inspire new work, new opportunities and even new career paths.
Take care,
Scott
