5 Fun Word Games To Play With Family That Use Only Pen And Paper

Sometimes it's great to take a break from your screen, and there's no better way to do that than by playing a few word games. Here are 5 word games you can try out, and you'll only need a pen and some paper!

1) Main Letter

1 - In the middle of a piece of paper, write out a letter and choose a category. For this example, we'll choose "A" and "Food".

2 - Next, write a word above, below, and to the sides that start and end with "A". For example:

  • Top - Banana
  • Right - Apple
  • Below - Apricot
  • Left - Papaya

3 - Repeat these steps for the new words and see how many you can make.

2) Hungry Hand

This is a family friendly version of the classic game Hangman.

1 - Draw a big circle (the plate) with 7 smaller circles in it.

2 - Think of a word to guess and a category for it.

3 - Have the child try to guess the letters. Correct letters are added to the blank spots. Wrong letters are added inside one of the circles.

4 - If all 7 circles get filled, the hand (the drawer) eats the letters and the child loses. If they guess the word correctly, they win!

3) Hidden Word

2 - Try to make new words using the letters from the main word. For "Superhero", the new words could be Soup, Rope, Sphere, Rose, etc.

4) Rhyme Time

2 - Set a timer for 1 minute.

3 - See how many words they can find that rhyme with the main words.

5) Word Stack

1 - Have 3 different words.

2 - Have the child figure out words that can go above or below to make a joined word.

For example, "School" is the beginning word, Sunday is on the top (Sunday school) and Bus is on the bottom (school bus).

3 - See if they can continue the stack either up or down until they get stuck.

I hope this list helps with future game ideas. Comment below which was your child's favorite. Stay tuned for more news and updates. Thanks for reading!
