Be Responsible, Show You Care
“Well, Candy’s not exactly a puppy—she’s a year old,” the shelter volunteer said.
“Oh, she’s so small! Can I take her for a walk?” I asked.
The volunteer sighed. “You can try… we’re still training her to do that—among other things.”
Oh boy.
I tugged gently on the leash. Candy sat. I encouraged. She stared.
So… I tried a treat. That worked—sort of. She followed it just enough for a short, awkward little walk.
That was my first hint—Candy might not be a puppy, but she definitely acted like one.
When Candy came home, the real adventure began. She chewed on things she shouldn’t (yes, even electric cords and controllers ), sampled food and drinks left within reach, and turned everyday moments into unpredictable chaos.
She was a challenge—but she was our challenge.
Thankfully, I had spent time reading books by Cesar Millan, and I leaned into what I learned: patience, consistency, and lots of loving guidance. Bit by bit, Candy began to adjust, and so did we.
And here’s the truth—responsibility isn’t always easy or convenient.
But it is how we show we care.
Candy’s wild, puppy-like behavior even inspired the character Peeps in Two Tails Are Better Than One. Peeps captures that same silly, mischievous energy—and the important lessons that come with it.
* This week’s focus: Be Responsible, Show You Care
To go along with this theme, I’m sharing a free printable coloring page of Peeps from the Parent & Teacher Guide—perfect for starting conversations with kids about caring for pets, belongings, and each other.
*Exciting News!
Two Tails Are Better Than One – A Silly Mutts Tale (Young Pup Edition) and the Parent & Teacher Guide will be re-launching on National Puppy Day, March 23 on Amazon
It’s the perfect time to celebrate puppies, second chances, and the joy (and responsibility!) of caring for our furry friends.
Best Wishes,
Joy Marier
Let’s keep it simple:
* Take care.
* Show love.
* Be responsible.
Because even the silliest mutts teach the biggest lessons.
