HALLOWEEN: Origin of Tricks and Treats

I remember when my grandmother came to live with us for awhile. She discouraged me from giving children candy for Halloween.

I was new on my spiritual path so I had no idea why she was so adamant about keeping the door closed on October 31. Now that I am older and a little wiser, I understand.

It took awhile. But I did start to question things. I was simply curious. I thought it was going to be something cute or funny. That was hardly the case.

Everything about Halloween welcomed the spirits of the dead. What we in society call fun actually activates a certain energy I really did not want in my home. Once again, my grandma was right.

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!" Deuteronomy 30:19

Most of the “holidays” we cherish turned out to have pagan origins. “Holidays” comes from the word holy days so if it’s not a “holy” day that recognizes God, gratitude, or any other life affirming celebration like a birthday or wedding anniversary, I really don’t need it. I’d rather stash the cash for a more meaningful investment or donation.

I then felt compelled to research the origins of Christmas, Easter, Tammuz, Hanukkah, Passover, Shavuot etc. You know the saying. Look before you leap.

Fortunately, some of them do have true meaning. It's just not the major ones that are celebrated with great fervor in America.

I believe that will change soon. People are getting wiser about how they use their time, money, and consciousness.

If you are serious about teaching your children good values, consider what you've just read. It may prevent cavities and certainly the outrageous Halloween decorations and candy bill.

Remember, what you put in is what you will eventually get out. Think about it.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6
