She Is Not Just Virtuous. She Is Chayil.
What the King James Bible got right — and what it left out — about the most powerful word in Proverbs 31

Most people who know Proverbs 31 think they know what it is about. The virtuous woman. The excellent wife. The one who rises while it is still dark, who makes linen garments, whose children call her blessed.
And those things are true.
But there is a word hidden in the very first verse of that passage — a word the King James translators rendered as ‘virtuous’ — that means something so much more powerful than the English word conveys that it changes the entire meaning of the passage.
That word is CHAYIL.
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Proverbs 31:10 KJV
The Hebrew word translated here as ‘virtuous’ is CHAYIL (pronounced khah-yil). And when you look at how this exact same word is used everywhere else in the Old Testament, the translation ‘virtuous’ — while not wrong — is profoundly incomplete.
What Chayil Really Means
CHAYIL appears 246 times in the Old Testament. Here are some of the ways it is translated in those other passages:
• A mighty army (Exodus 14:28 — describing Pharaoh’s military force)
• A man of valor (Judges 6:12 — used to describe Gideon before he knew he was one)
• Wealth and riches (Ruth 2:1 — Boaz is described as a man of great chayil)
• Strength and ability (1 Kings 11:28 — describing a man’s capabilities)
• An army, a force, a host (used over 50 times to describe military might)
Do you see it? The same word that is translated ‘virtuous’ in Proverbs 31 is the word used elsewhere for armies, warriors, military valor, wealth, and strength. When the writer of Proverbs asked ‘who can find a Chayil woman?’ — he was not asking who can find a gentle, domestically skilled wife. He was asking who can find a woman of military valor, of wealth, of wisdom, of unstoppable force.
The Proverbs 31 woman is not primarily a housewife. She is a warrior. She is wealthy. She is wise. She is a force of nature — and her price is above rubies because women like her are rare.
Three Dimensions of Chayil
Over years of study and revelation, three primary dimensions of Chayil have emerged that together form the complete picture of what this word means:
WARRIOR — Chayil is a military word. The Chayil woman is not passive. She is not waiting for someone else to fight her battles. She occupies territory. She exercises authority. She shows up in the Courts of Heaven and legislates on behalf of the Kingdom. She is a trained, equipped, strategic spiritual warrior.
WEALTH — Chayil is an economic word. The Proverbs 31 woman is not poor. She considers a field and buys it. She has income streams. She is a business owner, a property holder, a creator of abundance. Chayil wealth is not worldly accumulation — it is Kingdom stewardship of every resource God has given you.
WISDOM — Chayil is a relational and strategic word. The Proverbs 31 woman opens her mouth with wisdom, and the law of kindness is on her tongue. She models synergy, she replicates herself in others, she serves with excellence. Chayil wisdom is not just knowing the right answer — it is navigating relationships and circumstances with divine counsel.
Chayil Is for Men Too
One of the most important things to understand about Chayil is that the Bible never limits this identity to women. The word is used far more often to describe men than women in the Old Testament. Gideon was called a Chayil man. Boaz was a man of Chayil. David’s mighty men were men of Chayil.
The Proverbs 31 passage is not a job description for wives. It is a portrait of what a Kingdom citizen — male or female — looks like when they are fully activated in Warrior, Wealth, and Wisdom.
Chayil is not a woman’s club. It is a Kingdom standard. And the question God is asking every believer — man and woman alike — is simply this: are you becoming Chayil?
