Introduction
Let’s face it, we all want to hear God. If you’re saved, you probably not only like hearing God’s voice, but you also feel you need to hear it. Most Believers realize that prayer is not a monologue, it’s a dialogue. Prayer is a delight because it ushers in God’s presence. Like breathing, we begin to know that we need God’s presence, His anointing, and to hear His voice. In this Blog, we’re focusing on ways to Hear God’s voice according to the Bible.
Biblical Ways to Hear God
There are four major ways that God speaks to us. Naturally, God can choose to speak to us in any way He chooses because He’s Sovereign. He can speak through a song, a poem, a t.v. show, a movie, a toddler’s facial expression, etc. However, the main ways God speaks to us are by these four methods:
1. Through the Word. This is the primary way God speaks to us.
God talks to us when we read, study and reflect upon the Scriptures.
2. The Holy Spirit. God speaks to our spirits through His Spirit.
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13 NKJV
3. When praying, fasting, and talking with people.
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. Mark 11:24 NKJV
4. Through interactions with individuals and groups. And also personal devotions, Church Services like prayer meetings, Bible Study, etc.
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24, 25 NKJV
Action Steps to Kick-Start Your Hearing.
This is not an all-inclusive list, but it has four solid moves you can make to walk in a spirit of anticipation when it comes to hearing God’s voice.
1. Pray and ask God to talk to you. You say something similar to what little Samuel prayed when Eli, the Priest told him to say, speak Lord.
Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 1 Samuel 3:9 NKJV
2. Believe, He’ll talk. God longs to talk to us. Our job is to believe that He will.
35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Mark 5:35, 36 NKJV
3. Expect to hear. Know that He’ll answer.
“It shall come to pass
That before they call, I will answer;
And while they are still speaking, I will hear. Isaiah 65:24 NKJV
4. Praise God in advance for talking to you. Count it as done. Receive it as so.
Summary
Not only do we long to hear God’s voice, the Bible tells us to listen. We listen out for God’s voice, the leading and promptings of the Holy Spirit along with reminders to our spirits on the words Jesus spoke to us in the Bible.
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. John 10:27, 28 NKJV
So this is not just about listening for God’s voice when we pray or read the Bible, as examples. This is more so about staying connected to Him along with our desire to obey Him so we can live a life pleasing in His sight.
