Introduction.
Many of us have heard of the Bible story of the ten maidens. Five were wise and five were foolish. This parable enables us to see and know that we need to keep our lamps filled with oil to be ready to go back to heaven when Jesus Christ comes for us in the Rapture.
What Does it Mean to be Filled?
Keeping your lamp filled denotes being consistently filled with the Holy Spirit. In Isaiah 61:1, paraphrased, it says, the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, [meaning Christ, this is a foreshadow of the work He’d do on earth] because the Lord has anointed Me…”. The Spirit of God was not only upon Him, it indwelt Him. Jesus was and is the embodiment of the entire triune Godhead. See John 14:9. We are the Body of Christ. As an extension of Christ, we need to have the Holy Spirit resting upon and working inside of us. That’s why the Bible says, to be filled with the Spirit. See these two Bible passages below.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 61:1 NKJV
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:18 to 21 NKJV
How Oil Represents and Invokes the Anointing.
The oil represents the anointing and the Spirit of God. Here are a few Scriptural examples of how the oil signifies and also invokes the anointing.
1. God shows Moses how to have anointing oil for the priests and objects for the Tabernacle. Exodus 30:22 to 33.
"Moses was to use the anointing oil to anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. Just as the tabernacle was set apart to the LORD, Aaron and his sons were also completely set apart for serving as priests to the LORD. This meant that they were not to do any other type of occupation." (TheBibleSays.com, 2026)
2. The Prophet Samuel anoints David using oil because he was God’s choice for king. 1 Samuel 16:13.
3. Jesus trained the Disciples to anoint the sick with oil. Mark 6:13.
4. James admonishes the Elders to pray for the sick anointing them with oil. When they pray in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the prayer of faith saves the sick and God's Word says, He will raise them up. James 5:14, 15.
How Do We Stay Filled?
1. Put God First. Matthew 6:33, Psalm 34:9, 10.
2. Seek Him daily. John 15:4 to 10. Ask for God to fill you with the Holy Spirit to overflow.
3. Read and study the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15, 1 Timothy 4:5 to 11.
4. Share the Gospel and your testimony. Romans 1:16, 1 Thessalonians 5:14.
5. Give God the praise for both the big and small blessings He brings into your life. 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Psalm 100:4, 5. Remember, He is seeking for worshippers! John 4:23, 24.
Summary.
The only way to stay filled with God’s Spirit is to stay connected with Him. In John 15:1 to 10 Jesus Christ tells us to abide in Him and to stay in His love. If we stay connected to Him through daily prayer, repentance, study of the Bible, and fellowship with strong Believers, we will be filled. We should ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit and ask Him to help us abide in His love. And we will bear fruit, and the fruit will remain if we live committed and consecrated to His will and His way. The genuine fruit is evidence that we are connected to the true vine.
We might make mistakes along the way, but be of good cheer, Jesus has overcome the world. As long as we commit ourselves to live fully for Him, and run to God when we error, He will raise us up and help us along the way. If something has gotten a foothold or stronghold in your life, seek the wisdom of a mature Believer who walks circumspectly for guidance and deliverance.
Remember to repent quickly. That’s a major key to getting back on track and walking in the light as He is in the light. See 1 John 1:7.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 KJV
