Introduction.
Many of us know the story of Joseph. He was the son of Jacob, grandson of Isaac, and great grandson of Abraham. He was one of twelve sons of Jacob. He was given a coat of many colors by Jacob. Joseph had a major dream. Note that he received the coat of many colors before any of the dreams mentioned in the Book of Genesis. We’re focusing on Joseph today because he went through many challenges. As the Bible states, “Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him.” Psalm 105:19 KJV. God gave Joseph a Word, a prophetic word through dreams. This Word was given to him in order to help sustain him during the difficulties he would face.
Keep in mind that God decided to elevate Joseph to be Second in Command over a nation. It was God’s choice to bless Joseph while he served in Potiphar's house, while in prison, while he interpreted the dreams of the butler and baker. In this Blog, we’ll review five lessons from Joseph’s life that will uplift and motivate you as you encounter tests and trials.
Noted directly below is a passage from Psalm 105. Verses 7 to 22 are listed out so we have a backdrop to the main verses we’ll target. Main verses to remember are in Psalm 105:19 to 21.
Psalm 105:7 to 22.
7 He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.
8 He remembers His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations, 9 The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, 10 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant, 11 Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance,” 12 When they were few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it.
13 When they went from one nation to another, From one kingdom to another people,
14 He permitted no one to do them wrong; Yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes,
15 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.”
16 Moreover He called for a famine in the land; He destroyed all the provision of bread.
17 He sent a man before them— Joseph—who was sold as a slave. 18 They hurt his feet with fetters, He was laid in irons.
19 Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the Lord tested him. 20 The king sent and released him, The ruler of the people let him go free. 21 He made him lord of his house, And ruler of all his possessions, 22 To bind his princes at his pleasure, And teach his elders wisdom. Psalm 105:7 to 22 NKJV
Encouraging Word.
There’s a set time and a due season for the promised blessings to come into full manifestation. At any given time, blessings are always happening throughout the world. If the Lord wasn’t constantly gracious and merciful, everything would collapse. The whole earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
God gave Joseph a “word” through dreams. God can speak to you directly, through a vision, through a Bible verse, through a song, and so many other ways. For those specific “words” that you receive to come to pass, there can first be testing, going through trials, suffering so that both God and us can see if we were willing to press through, be obedient to Him and wait on God’s timing for the breakthrough or miracle to materialize.
- There’s growth, maturity, and revelation in the waiting.
- You find out who’s who in the waiting.
- Learn to rely, lean, and trust God in the waiting.
- You acquire the ability to be still and quiet while you wait. Psalm 105:19 to 21
5 Lessons from Joseph’s Life.
1. Joseph Trusted in God in a special way. He had an undying loyalty to God. We can see from the Bible that God knew He could use Joseph in a mighty way to bring the people through seven years of famine.
2. Joseph Believed God’s promise. He knew that God had given him the dreams and those dreams would come to pass.
3. Joseph was Forgiving. He didn’t hold a grudge against his brothers for throwing him into the pit and selling him to the Ishmeelites.
4. He was patient in trials. When Joseph was thrown in the pit, He waited on God. And when he was lied on by Potipher’s wife, Joseph yet waited.
5. Joseph was obedient to God. Joseph didn’t go ahead of God and said, it looks like I just have to take care of things on my wine. He knew the dreams had not come to pass, so He obeyed God while he waited.
6. Bonus: Joseph had a revelation of “Legacy” or what we call spiritual heritage. In Joseph’s case, it was both natural and spiritual heritage that he was carrying in his day to day obedience and that he passed on to his family. This was exemplified right before he died when Joseph asked his brothers to carry his body out of Egypt and back to Canaan [after his death].
In your spare time read Psalm 106:1 to 5.
Summary
Joseph's final words to his brothers in Genesis 50:22 emphasize the significance of God's promises and the Israelites' eventual deliverance from Egyptian slavery. He assures them that God will undoubtedly visit their descendants and bring them out of Egypt to the Promised Land, reiterating God's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He also requests that they take his bones with them to be buried in Canaan.
Joseph’s models a life of commitment to God’s statutes, character, and patience. He was willing to wait on God’s timing. Thousands of people reaped the benefits of Joseph’s sacrifices and submission to God’s plan. He had a divine assignment upon his life. We can tell he didn’t take it lightly. Joseph didn’t interrupt God’s plans but instead trusted God’s way of doing and moving in his life. He lived this kind of life before his family and can be used as an example of how to allow God to lead us today even during times of His silence.
Blessings,
Tanda
