So why do we teach Phonics?
Well, one reason is that it can promote healthy reading skills and build confident readers.
Reading is a skill, and just like any other skill can be taught with the right resources and tools.
A young learner is introduced to reading usually through a colourful Flashcard or Storybook.
Teaching phonics in the classroom can be fun, start by looking at word patterns, then introduce the learners to new word patterns and sounds as they build their vocabulary skills.
Young learners look at the word patterns and sounds and eventually, the reading skills consolidation happens....it starts to click!
Allowing children to access visual resources and reading materials is vitally important for good reading habits to form.
Materials that increase in difficulty as learners gain skills are key to building confidence. Encouraging learners early to develop reading habits helps them become lifelong readers, that can confidently use phonics skills and sound pattern recognition in future reading activities.
