How to Talk to Clients About EMDR as a Christian Therapist

One of the challenges Christian therapists face is explaining EMDR to clients in a way that is honest, ethical, and faith-sensitive. Here are a few tips:

✅ 1. Be Transparent

Explain what EMDR is in clear, non-jargon terms: “EMDR is a structured therapy that helps people process traumatic memories so they no longer feel so distressing.”

✅ 2. Address Spiritual Concerns

If you sense clients are wary, reassure them: “EMDR is not hypnosis or anything spiritual in itself. It uses how God designed our brains to heal.” Invite them to ask questions.

✅ 3. Offer Spiritually Integrated Options

For Christian clients who want it, you can gently incorporate prayer, Scripture reflection, or discussion of spiritual themes. Always get consent and let them lead.

✅ 4. Respect Boundaries

Some Christian clients may want strictly clinical EMDR without spiritual integration. Others may prefer to pray before or after sessions. Respect both.

✅ 5. Frame EMDR as Part of Holistic Care

Help clients see EMDR as one piece of their healing journey. “We’re working on your trauma responses here in session, but your spiritual life, community, and faith are equally important parts of your healing.”

Being a Christian EMDR therapist means you can provide excellent clinical care while honoring your clients’ faith and values. Don’t be afraid to talk about it openly and compassionately.
