Born in 608 B.C. his life's mission was to free people's minds from political and religious constraints. He attracted a growing group of students eager to find personal independence and experience the deeper meanings of love and life. His core teaching was simple yet profound: "Know thyself, then thou shalt know the universe and God."
In 532 B.C., Pythagoras set up his own university in Crotona, southern Italy. He welcomed anyone who was a genuine seeker regardless of sex, race, color, or creed. The major course taught was in self-development with a three-part curriculum lasting a trimester each:
1. "Preparation": intensive training in the "ten mathematical disciplines," designed to provide the student with "empire over the self"
2. "Purification": understanding of life, its purpose and how to work in harmony with that purpose, taught through the "Science of Numbers"
3. "Perfection": the integration of the physical, mental and spiritual components of each person and of life
