OT's Role in Nutrition

For the longest time I didn't think I had a role in educating my patients on nutrition as an occupational therapist. A topic that is near and dear to my heart. However, I recently realized that yes indeed it is within the OT scope of practice to provide nutrition education within the right circumstances. OT's role in nutrition education including helping individuals improve their ability to participate in food related activities, making informed food choices, and adapting their environment to support healthy habits. OT's can address various aspects of nutrition and collaborate with a registered dietitian and physician to implement comprehensive nutrition interventions. Let's help support our patients understand the connection between nutrition and wellbeing.


OTs have a unique role in terms of nutrition. 


1.Assessing and Addressing Difficulties with Eating and Swallowing: 

  • OTs can evaluate and address issues related to oral-motor skills, chewing, and swallowing.
  • They may provide strategies for modified food textures, AE, or environmental adaptations to facilitate safe and independent eating.

2.Promoting Independence in Food-Related Activities: 

  • OTs can help individuals develop skills for meal planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation.
  • They may teach strategies for budgeting, meal prepping, and utilizing resources to afford nutritious meals.

3. Educating and Empowering Individuals: 

  • OTs can provide information about healthy eating habits, food safety, and the importance of nutrition.
  • They can help individuals identify their eating patterns, values, and interests related to food.
  • OTs can empower individuals to make informed choices and develop sustainable eating routines.
