For too many freelancers, lodgement day is the day they find out whether they can afford their tax bill. It shouldn't work that way.
Every quarter, the same thing happens to a remarkable number of Australian sole traders.
The BAS lodgement date appears on the calendar. They log into MyGov or call their accountant. A number comes back. It's larger than expected — sometimes much larger — and the scramble begins. Can I pay this now? Do I need a payment plan? Did I set enough aside?
This isn't a cash flow problem. It's an information problem.
The liability was never a surprise — it was building in plain sight the whole quarter.
What was missing was visibility.
Here's how GST actually works for a registered sole trader.
Every dollar of GST-inclusive revenue you receive contains a component that belongs to the ATO. Not a component you owe them later - a component that was never yours to begin with. The correct way to extract it, per ATO guidelines, is to divide the gross amount by eleven. That's 1/11th of every payment, every time. Not ten percent of the net. Not a rough estimate at quarter end. 1/11th, as it arrives.
On the other side, any GST you pay on business expenses - your software subscriptions, your professional insurance, your equipment - is an input tax credit you can claim back.
Your BAS liability is the difference between what you collected and what you can claim.
The problem is that most freelancers aren't tracking this in real time.
They're reconstructing it at quarter end from bank statements and receipts, by which point the money has often already been spent on things that weren't GST liability.
Don't Panic tracks GST collected and input tax credits across the quarter as you go, so the lodgement figure is never a revelation.
It shows whether your current savings are sufficient to cover the liability. It calculates a monthly set-aside target so you always know how much to park.
And it flags shortfalls before they become crises - not at 11pm the night before lodgement.
One important thing it isn't: a lodgement tool. It doesn't connect to the ATO, it doesn't file anything, and it doesn't replace your accountant. What it does is make sure you arrive at lodgement time with the right number already calculated, the right money already set aside, and zero surprises.
The ATO isn't flexible about timing. Your preparation can be.
