Suzanne Lang
Hello. I’m Suzanne Lang, author and illustrator at The Moon Garden, located in Adelaide, South Australia.
Art, writing and music have been a major part of my life but I also have a keen interest in herbs, complimentary healing techniques and spirituality and these fields provide a rich source for ideas that, naturally, influence my children’s stories.
My deep love of, and affinity with, Nature was fostered by my Mother and was further enriched by a wonderful childhood, particularly those years spent on our property in the Adelaide Hills. It is this place which inspired the location for my first book, Salito Finds the Beauty of the World.
I truly believe my childhood experiences established an interest in care for the environment, wildlife and the planet therefore the connection between Nature and child is the soul essence underlying most of my stories.
I am a big supporter of children having as much access to Nature as possible – park lands, the beach, rivers and creeks, the sea, forests, nature reserves, wildlife sanctuaries – anywhere children can experience natural life, as I believe it calms the emotions, stimulates the mind and cultivates patience, courage, empathy and compassion.
I am a qualified meditation teacher and it was through a particular exercise within this training that I tapped into my “inner child”. So vivid and enlightening was this experience, I was inspired to investigate the subject of the “inner child” further.
This experience prompted me to look back at my childhood – the experiences, activities, dreams, what I liked and didn’t like. Comparing my adult self to my inner child, I saw what traits had developed and what had remained unchanged.
The inner 4 or 5 year old “me” has inspired, dare I say insisted, I write for her and others her age that love stories with beautiful illustrations that have heart and soul, that bring hope and joy, and that inspire confidence, a curious mind and an open heart.
