If Harry Potter was your thing, then Yote Diamondback's story will be up your alley. Like Harry, Yote attends a magic school, the Arcane Elemental Academy. Both the school and the surrounding area become characters, as Yote finds solace there.
But I'm not spewing the same old, same old. Arcane's not a castle, nor is it so freaking archaic. It's a massive high school campus that boasts 21st century tech and 32 different schools within its walls. Runic elemental magic is its thing, and merit makes it zing.
That said, similarities between Arcane and Hogwarts are all over the place. There's a nearby forest full of mystery, as Yote will find out. From time warps to clearings that, when connected, form a pentagram. It's also home to dark and dangerous creatures.
Arcane's located near the edge of Aurora Village, a quaint town that'll give you Americana vibes. There's a main street full of local and mom-and-pop outlets in every niche, magical and non-magical, you can think of. Neighborhoods galore branch off of Main, nestled either within or atop the area's rolling hills, providing stunning scenery of the nearby countryside full of deciduous forest.
In the autumn, the area's painted with red, yellow, brown, and rust. In the winter, it looks like a Christmas village. Come the spring and summer, sapphire skies watch over the blooming pink, purple, and pale yellow flora, relaying a hint of optimism.
But Arcane wouldn't be a true magic school fantasy without a mystery and severe repercussions.
Shortly after Yote Diamondback starts attending Arcane, oddities emerge. A strange woman in a trench coat appears to follow her. The nearby forest calls her in the subtlest ways. And she experiences phenomena that make her question her sanity.
There's mystery, and Yote wouldn't be the protagonist if it didn't have something to do with her. What's more disturbing? The truth she unveils. Nothing would be more unsettling to a high school freshman.
