Why Every Date You Write Is a Roman Decision

Look at today's date.


Whatever it is — the month, the day, the year — every element of it was shaped by decisions made in ancient Rome. Not influenced by Rome. Not inspired by Rome. Directly, mechanically determined by specific decisions made by specific Romans under specific pressures that had nothing to do with you, nothing to do with the modern world, and everything to do with political crises, military emergencies, and one monk's liturgical scheduling problem.


This is not a metaphor. It is a precise historical statement. And once you understand it, you will never write a date quite the same way again.


January 1 Exists Because of a Rebellion in Spain

Let us start with the most basic question: why does the year begin on January 1?


There is no astronomical reason. January 1 is not the winter solstice. It is not a significant point in the lunar cycle. It is not the date of any founding event in Roman religion or mythology. It is, in the strictest sense, arbitrary.


It exists because in 154 BC, a town in what is now northeastern Spain called Segeda rebelled against Rome.


Under the existing Roman system, consuls — the two men who held the highest executive power in the Republic — assumed office on March 15, the Ides of March. March was the traditional start of the military campaigning season. It was named after Mars, the god of war, for exactly this reason.


But the situation in Spain required immediate military response. The consul designated to handle the rebellion — Quintus Fulvius Nobilior — could not wait until March. The rebellion would not pause politely while Rome's administrative calendar caught up with military reality.


The Senate's solution was direct: move the date consuls took office. From 153 BC onward, consuls would assume office on January 1 — giving the incoming magistrate two and a half additional months to prepare, travel, and engage before the summer campaign season.


Nobody at the time understood they were making a decision that would echo for two and a half thousand years. They were solving a logistical problem. January 1 has been the start of the Western year ever since — carried forward through the Roman Empire, through the medieval church, through the Gregorian reform of 1582, into every country and calendar system that inherited the Western tradition.

The Months Are a Roll Call of Roman History


The names of the months are not arbitrary labels. They are a compressed history of Rome.


March is Mars — the god of war, the original first month of the Roman year when the year began in spring and the first act of the new year was to go on campaign.


January is Janus — the two-faced god of beginnings and doorways, added to the calendar when January became the official start of the year.


July was not always July. It was Quintilis — the fifth month, from the Latin quintus, because when the year began in March it was indeed the fifth month. It was renamed after Julius Caesar following his assassination in 44 BC, in recognition of the man who had reformed the calendar that bears his name.

August was Sextilis — the sixth month. It was renamed for Augustus Caesar, Rome's first emperor, in 8 BC. Augustus was careful to ensure his month had as many days as Julius Caesar's — 31 — which required stealing a day from February, which is why February has 28 days in ordinary years and not 29 or 30.


September, October, November, December. Seven, eight, nine, ten in Latin. These months still carry the numbers of a calendar that began in March — permanent fossils of a ten-month year that existed before Numa Pompilius, Rome's legendary second king, added January and February to cover the winter gap that the original calendar had simply left unnamed, as though winter were outside of time altogether.

Every time you write the name of a month you are reciting Roman history without knowing it.


Caesar Invented a 445-Day Year


By the time Julius Caesar became Pontifex Maximus — chief priest, and the man officially responsible for the Roman calendar — the calendar was, by any reasonable measure, broken.


The Roman calendar was based on a lunar year of 355 days. The solar year — the one that governs actual seasons — is approximately 365.25 days. These two systems drift apart at about ten days per year. To prevent the calendar from sliding completely out of alignment with reality, the priests were authorised to insert an extra month — called Mercedonius — every other year.


In theory this worked. In practice it had become a political weapon. Priests inserted or withheld the extra month to extend the terms of political allies or cut short the terms of opponents. During the chaos of the late Republican civil wars, several necessary insertions were simply skipped.


By the time Caesar assessed the situation around 46 BC, the calendar had drifted roughly three months behind the solar year. The harvest festivals were being held in summer. The vintage celebrations were occurring before the grapes were ripe. Roman religious observance, tightly tied to the agricultural cycle, was being conducted in entirely the wrong seasons.


Caesar was not a man who tolerated problems that had solutions. He brought in Sosigenes, an astronomer from Alexandria, and tasked him with designing a new system.


The Julian calendar that resulted was elegant. 365 days. One extra day every four years to account for the fractional quarter-day that accumulated annually. Simple, predictable, accurate to within eleven minutes per year.


But before the new calendar could begin, the existing one had to be brought back into alignment with the seasons. And the gap was enormous.


Caesar's solution was characteristically decisive and characteristically disruptive. The year 46 BC was extended to 445 days.


Four hundred and forty-five days. Fifteen months. The Romans called it annus confusionis — the year of confusion. Cicero, who was not Caesar's greatest admirer, quipped that Caesar had now arranged for the very stars to rise according to his decrees.


On January 1, 45 BC, the new calendar began. Properly aligned with the solar year. Stable. Predictable. Within a generation it was simply how time worked.


It would remain so for sixteen centuries.


The Gregorian Calendar Is Caesar's Calendar


In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull reforming the Julian calendar. Ten days were dropped from October — Thursday October 4 was followed immediately by Friday October 15. The leap year rule was adjusted: century years would only be leap years if divisible by 400.


This is the Gregorian calendar. It is the calendar used today by virtually every country in the world for civil purposes.


What it is, structurally, is the Julian calendar with a minor correction. The eleven-minute-per-year error in Caesar's system had accumulated over sixteen centuries to a drift of ten days. Gregory fixed the drift. He did not rebuild the calendar. He adjusted it.


The months are Caesar's months. The leap year is Caesar's leap year, modified. The 365-day year is Caesar's year. When you write today's date, the architecture you are using was designed in 46 BC by a Roman general and an Alexandrian astronomer working in a military tent.


Gregory XIII corrected Caesar's arithmetic. Caesar built the clock.


The Year Number Was Calculated by a Monk Who Got It Wrong


The number of the year — whatever year it currently is as you read this — comes from a calculation made in AD 525 by a Scythian monk named Dionysius Exiguus. His name means Dionysius the Small, a title he apparently chose himself as an expression of humility.


Pope John I had asked him to produce tables for calculating the date of Easter in future years. The tables then in use by the Western Church counted years from AD 284, the beginning of the Emperor Diocletian's reign. Dionysius refused to continue using Diocletian's era. His reason was direct: Diocletian had been the architect of the last great systematic persecution of Christians. To perpetuate his name in the Church's own reckoning of time was wrong.


He chose instead to number years from the birth of Jesus Christ, which he calculated from the Gospel accounts, the consular records, and the astronomical tables available to him.


His calculation contained a significant error that became apparent relatively quickly. The Gospels are explicit that Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great. Herod died in 4 BC by the chronology Dionysius was using. This means Christ must have been born at least four years before the beginning of the era supposedly dating from his birth.


The year number you write is miscalibrated by approximately four years. The historical Jesus was almost certainly born somewhere between 6 and 4 BC.


Dionysius also introduced a second peculiarity. He did not include a year zero. His system goes directly from 1 BC to AD 1. Every calculation of intervals across that boundary requires adjustment to account for the missing year.


Both errors — the miscalculation of Christ's birth and the absence of year zero — are embedded in every date written in the Western world today. They are fossils of a sixth-century monk's honest attempt to solve a liturgical scheduling problem, adopted because they were useful, preserved because changing them would be more disruptive than living with them.


Why This Matters


There is a reason I have spent 62 years studying Rome and find it impossible to stop.

It is not nostalgia. It is not admiration for empire. It is this: the Romans made decisions under pressure that proved so structurally sound, so practically effective, so deeply embedded in the systems that came after them, that we still live inside those decisions without knowing it.


January 1. The names of the months. The 365-day year and the leap year. The year number itself — miscalculated and preserved for fifteen centuries because nobody could agree on something better.

None of this was designed as a coherent system. The Roman calendar is an accretion of decisions made under military pressure, religious obligation, political necessity, and scholarly calculation. It is exactly what you would expect from a civilisation that lasted a thousand years, ran an empire spanning three continents, and solved every problem it encountered with the tools immediately to hand.


The Stoic philosophers who are the foundation of The Inner Citadel course lived inside this system. Marcus Aurelius renewed his tribunician power annually and dated his reign by that renewal. Seneca wrote letters in a year named after two consuls. Epictetus taught in a town that used Caesar's calendar.

When you sit down to do the evening reflection that Seneca recommended — reviewing the day, asking what you did well and what you could have done better — you do it on a day with a Roman name, in a month with a Roman name, in a year counted from a Roman monk's calculation.


The past is closer than it looks.


It always was.
