Sometimes it’s not the biggest fish that leave the biggest impression, but the ones that tell a story. Last winter I experienced one of those moments during a fishing trip to England. A small village, a quiet lake, cold conditions… and eventually a beautiful mirror carp that made the whole session unforgettable.
A Cold Winter Trip to England
It was the end of February, right in the middle of winter. During the night the temperature dropped to around 4°C, and there was a strong south-west wind blowing across the lake. The day before, the wind had reached around force 5, but it was actually relatively mild for that time of year.
Those conditions can sometimes make all the difference in winter. A small rise in temperature can slightly warm the water and make carp just a bit more active.
The lake was located near a quiet English village. One of those places that instantly gives you that classic English carp fishing feeling: bare trees, grey skies, and a calm lake stretching out in front of you.
Keeping the Bait Simple
For this session I didn’t even bring any special bait. In fact, I had some cheap feed boilies with me that I mainly wanted to use up.
My rig was very simple:
- 20 mm feed boilie
- Pink wafter on top
- Fished as a snowman presentation
Many anglers think you always need expensive or exclusive bait, but this session proved once again that simple and affordable bait can work just as well.
The Take
Winter fishing can often be quiet for long periods. But suddenly there it was — the take.
After a nice fight, a beautiful fish slid into the net: a thick mirror carp with a stunning scale pattern and bright orange fins. Not the biggest carp in the world, but definitely a fish with character.
On the scales it weighed 11.2 kg (around 24.7 lb).
For winter conditions, that’s an amazing fish and one you simply have to appreciate.
More Action Underwater
Although this mirror carp was the highlight of the weekend, the session wasn’t completely quiet afterwards. There were also plenty of smaller silver fish caught during the trip. Often that’s a good sign that there’s still activity in the water, even in colder months.
And sometimes that’s exactly what keeps your confidence high on a winter session.
The Lesson from This Session
This trip once again showed a few important things:
- Winter carp can definitely still feed
- Milder weather periods can make a big difference
- Cheap bait can work perfectly well
- A simple presentation is often all you need
At the end of the day, it’s not always about catching the biggest fish, but about the moments you experience by the water.
A Weekend to Remember
A beautiful English lake, winter conditions, a stunning 11.2 kg mirror carp, and a relaxed fishing session.
Sometimes you only need one good fish to make an entire weekend special.
And this mirror carp was definitely one of those. 🎣
