5 Misconceptions of Being an Author

Being an author is a dream for many people, and with the rise of self-publishing and online platforms, it has become easier than ever to publish your work. However, there are many misconceptions about what it means to be an author. In this blog post, we will discuss the top 5 misconceptions about being an author. Because folks be telling long tales LOL it's seriously rewarding but we must give the real at all times.

Being an author is a glamorous job

One of the biggest misconceptions about being an author is that it's a glamorous job. Many people imagine authors sitting in their cozy writing nooks, surrounded by books and sipping on coffee while typing away on their laptops. However, the reality is quite different. Being an author involves a lot of hard work, long hours, and many revisions. Writing can be a solitary and often isolating process, and authors may spend weeks or even months on a single piece of writing. Basically, we typically are a hot mess by the time the book is finished. Emotions in shambles, nerves shot, and feeling the pressure of releasing it to the world. We are not all traveling the world and sipping champagne.

Authors are naturally gifted writers

Another misconception about authors is that they are naturally gifted writers. While some writers may have a natural talent for writing, most authors work hard to improve their skills. Writing is a craft that requires practice and dedication, and even the best writers have to work at it. It takes years of practice and learning to become a skilled writer. My advice is to be clear that you will learn as you go. Each release will teach something. Be patient and always be willing to learn. If this was the case I wouldn't need an editor LOL

Authors make a lot of money

Many people believe that authors make a lot of money from their writing. While there are some authors who have become very successful and wealthy, the reality is that most authors don't make a lot of money from their writing. According to a survey by the Authors Guild, the median income for a full-time author in the United States is only $20,300 per year. Truth is, you can't do it for the money. What was hot last month is not hot this month. Who was on top may not be on top. Do it because you love it! Basically, NO TF we don't. I'm as poor as I was before I started LOL JK

Authors only write in one genre

Another common misconception about authors is that they only write in one genre. While some authors may specialize in a particular genre, many writers write in multiple genres. Writing in different genres can help authors expand their skills and reach a wider audience. It's ok to branch out and try something new. You may surprise yourself. I did and surprised my readers too. That was fun!

Authors don't need to promote their own work

Many aspiring authors believe that once they publish their books, their work is done. However, promoting your book is just as important as writing it. Authors need to actively promote their work through social media, book signings, and other events. Without promotion, it can be difficult for readers to find and discover your work. If you don't who will? No one should promote your work better than you. Get out of the shadows and into the light.

In conclusion, being an author is a lot of hard work, and there are many misconceptions about what it entails. Authors must work hard to improve their writing skills, promote their work, and manage their own expectations. While being an author can be a challenging and sometimes lonely journey, it can also be incredibly rewarding.
