Doubt is good… Dealing with Imposter Syndrome

Conquer Imposter Syndrome (Again!)

Hey there, composers! You’ve unlocked another edition of The Media Composer Vault, your cosy corner for tackling the highs and lows of making it in today’s music scene. Let’s be honest—being a musician isn’t exactly a walk in the park. That’s why I’m here to share tips, tricks, and friendly reminders that you’re not in this alone.

I’m Theo, and while I’m not a superstar composer (yet!), I’ve spent nearly a decade navigating the twists and turns of the industry. My goal? To share everything I’ve learned to help you avoid the mistakes I made and make your journey a little smoother—and hopefully a lot more fun.

This week, we’re revisiting a topic I know many of us struggle with: Imposter Syndrome. We’ve touched on it before (you can catch up here if you missed it), but I’ve got a few fresh insights to help you keep those nagging doubts at bay.

Let’s face it, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who wrestles with these feelings. But over the years, I’ve stumbled upon some nuggets of wisdom that help me push through. If they’ve worked for me, I’m confident they might do wonders for you, too.

So, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s crack open the Vault and find some gems! 🎵

1. Embracing Doubt

Hey there, fellow composers and creatives! Today, I want to tackle a quick but powerful tip: imposter syndrome. Ever feel like you don’t deserve to aim for the big dreams you’ve set for yourself? Here’s the twist—doubt is actually a sign you’re on the right track. If your goals are easy and risk-free, chances are they’re not pushing you to grow. Feeling uneasy? Good! It means you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and chasing real progress.

2. Shifting Your Perspective

When I recently felt like an imposter—questioning if I should even be writing this blog—I realised something important: that jittery feeling of not being good enough is actually a reminder that I’m reaching for bigger goals. A part of me wanted to stay average and safe, but another part was saying, “You’re aiming higher, and that’s okay!”

3. Why Doubt is Good

That sinking worry in your stomach can be your best friend. It tells you that you’re changing, breaking away from your old self and striving to become better. Sure, it’s uncomfortable, but isn’t that the point? If it all felt easy, you wouldn’t celebrate the victory when you finally arrive. Think of it like winning the lottery without earning it—where’s the thrill in that?
