Most composers think their job begins and ends with creating music. Makes sense, right? You’re a composer, so composing music should be the main thing. WRONG. Big time. Let me explain:

Imagine a director loves your music and wants to meet you. But when they do, they find you’re not great at communication or collaboration. Will they hire you? Nope. They’ll go with someone who’s easier to work with—even if their music is just okay.

The truth is, your music is only part of the equation. The real key to success? Recognising that you are the business, and your music is just the product.



So, What Does That Mean?



If you’re a business, you’ve got to act like one:

Work on Communication Skills: Talk about your ideas clearly and confidently.

Collaborate Like a Pro: Be open, adaptable, and a team player.

Master Self-Promotion: Network, use social media effectively, and let people know you exist.

Be Multi-Faceted: Expand your skill set beyond just music.

Even the best music won’t get you far if you can’t sell yourself. Successful composers aren’t just good at making music—they’re good at marketing, networking, and building relationships.



The Bottom Line



Think of it this way: Would you trust a business with an amazing product but zero marketing strategy? Probably not. The same goes for composers. Your music might be incredible, but without the right skills to back it up, it won’t matter.

So here’s your homework: Start treating yourself like a business. Refine every part of your “brand,” from your communication skills to your online presence. The better you sell your product (your music), the more opportunities will come your way.
