Hey composers! Welcome to the second instalment of The Media Composer Vault. Today, we’re diving into a question every composer has wrestled with: Am I ready to be a media composer? Spoiler alert: you’re not alone—every pro has faced this crossroads. So, let’s cut to the chase, open the Vault, and slay this beast together!
NO EXPERIENCE? NO PROBLEM
Here’s the thing—so many up-and-coming composers get stuck in the “I’m not experienced enough” loop. “Just one more practice scene,” they say, “and THEN I’ll start looking for work.” Sound familiar? I know it does because I used to think the exact same way. I believed that if I just practiced enough, when the time came to score my first short film, TV show, or game, I’d nail it because I’d rehearsed it to death.
But here’s the honest truth: NOTHING—and I mean NOTHING—can fully prepare you for your first gig. Practice is great (and yes, it helps), but no amount of it can simulate the real experience: collaborating with directors or producers, dealing with tight deadlines, managing stress, and feeling the pure adrenaline and joy of getting that first job.
That’s why I say, NO EXPERIENCE? NO PROBLEM. The best way to know if you’re ready? Dive in, take that leap, and find out. Chances are, at the end of your first project, you’ll look back and say, “Hey, I actually did it!” And often, the answer to “Am I ready?” will be a big, confident YES.
And let me leave you with this: you’ve got nothing to lose by going for that first gig. If it doesn’t go perfectly, no problem—you’ll walk away with valuable experience you can only gain by doing. But imagine if it goes well. Picture the pride, the excitement, and the joy of knowing you nailed it, and everyone—especially YOU—is thrilled with the result.
Believe it or not, you’re already ready to take on your first film, TV show, or game. So go out there and show the world what you’ve got! I’m cheering you on, so don’t forget to let me know how it goes! I’m genuinely interested in hearing how it goes so let me know!
Keep composing!
