Who Even Are You??! Building Trust as a Composer

Hey composers, welcome to another edition of The Vault! Last week, we tackled the gut-punch topic of rejection—how to face it and keep going (missed it? Catch up here). This week, we’re rolling up our sleeves to tackle the next big hurdle: why your outreach isn’t landing gigs—and how to fix it.

Let’s face it: sometimes, you’ll send 100 emails and hear back from… crickets. But fear not—there’s hope! Some folks are simply too busy to respond, and that’s out of your hands. Today, though, we’re zooming in on what you can control: how to market yourself so you’re an irresistible pick when they do notice you.

🔑 Who Even Are You? Build Trust. Show Your Work.

Here’s the thing: every solid relationship is built on trust, whether it’s with your friends, family, or a filmmaker who’s considering trusting you with their film’s music. If filmmakers don’t know who you are or what you can do, why would they hire you? That’s why you need to SHOW YOUR WORK.

And no, I’m not saying you should vlog your every breath (though, hey, it might work for some!). But giving people a glimpse into your world—your projects, your creative process, even your personality—can help them feel like they already know you. And guess what? When they know you, they’re way more likely to trust you.

🚀 Marketing Tips to Stand Out:

Social Proof: Share snippets of your past work, testimonials, or behind-the-scenes clips.

Consistency is Key: Be present online—regularly post updates, insights, or even personal wins.

Be Relatable: People connect with people. Share your story, struggles, and passion for your craft.

When you put yourself out there, you create opportunities for people to connect with and trust you—before you’ve even spoken.

✨ Real Talk from an Introvert

Look, I’m still learning this myself. I used to keep everything bottled up, thinking my work would speak for itself. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. Trust isn’t built in silence—it’s built through openness. Sharing my story has made a difference in my career, and I hope it can for yours too.

Until next time, keep composing and showing the world what you’ve got! 🎼
