In a world filled with noise, social media opinions, flashy preachers, and confusing messages, it can feel overwhelming to figure out what’s true, what’s not, and where God is in all of it. This is where discernment becomes essential for every Spirit-filled believer.
What Is Discernment?
Discernment, simply put, is the ability to perceive, distinguish, or judge rightly, especially between truth and error, good and evil, and God’s will versus the enemy’s deception. For the Pentecostal believer, discernment isn’t just mental sharpness; it’s spiritual insight. It's hearing the whisper of the Holy Spirit amid the world's roar.
The Bible tells us:
“But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
Hebrews 5:14 (NIV)
Discernment isn’t automatic. We grow into it through prayer, time in the Word, and a close relationship with the Holy Spirit.
What Does the Bible Say About Discernment?
The Bible places high value on spiritual discernment. Paul prays for the Philippians:
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may discern what is best...”
Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV)
Discernment helps us walk in wisdom, love others well, and stay on the narrow path. It guards us from being “tossed back and forth by the waves” (Ephesians 4:14) of false doctrine and manipulation.
What Is the Discernment of Spirits?
The discernment of spirits is one of the nine gifts of the Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12. This is a supernatural gift that enables a believer to recognize whether something is from the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, or a demonic spirit.
“To another, discerning of spirits...”
1 Corinthians 12:10 (NKJV)
In Pentecostal circles, we believe that spiritual warfare is real. Not every preacher is sent by God, and not every voice in your head is from Him. The ability to discern spirits clears the confusion. It helps us identify the spirit behind a message, action, or atmosphere, especially in worship, counseling, and deliverance ministry.
Why We Must Learn to Discern According to God’s Word
The Word of God is our anchor. Without it, our emotions or personal experiences can mislead us. Hebrews 4:12 tells us the Word is “living and active... it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
In a culture that glorifies personal truth over God’s truth, we need to constantly compare what we hear, see, and feel with Scripture. Even the most powerful spiritual experiences must be measured by the Word.
Discernment guided by the Holy Spirit and the Word keeps us safe and effective. It protects our churches from false teachings and keeps our hearts tender before the Lord.
Discerning During the End Times
Jesus warned us repeatedly that in the last days, deception would increase:
“For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform enormous signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”
Matthew 24:24 (NIV)
The situation is serious. Even signs and wonders aren’t always proof of God’s hand. Without discernment, believers can be led astray by charisma or counterfeit miracles. The Antichrist will come with lying signs and wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10). That’s why now more than ever, we must be grounded in the Spirit and in truth.
Discernment these days is not optional; it’s survival.
Encouragement: You Can Grow in Discernment
If reading this made you feel a bit overwhelmed, take heart. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11). You are not alone. God desires you to grow in discernment, and He’s patient with the process.
Ask Him daily:
“Lord, give me eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to discern what pleases You.”
You don’t have to be a prophet or theologian to be discerning; you must be close to Jesus. The more time you spend with Him, the more you’ll recognize what is and isn’t from Him. Just like sheep know their shepherd’s voice, you’ll learn when something “off” is trying to sneak in.
Final Thoughts
Discernment is like spiritual eyesight. Without it, you’re walking in the dark. But with it, you’ll see clearly, even in confusing or chaotic times. As Pentecostal believers, we don’t walk by emotion or popularity but by the Spirit. Let’s be people of the Word, people of prayer, and people who discern well.
“Test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (ESV)
You were born for such a time as this. Stay awake. Stay sharp. Stay filled with the Spirit.
