Free Junk Journal Printables: What to Check Before You Print

There is a lot of free junk journal material online and most of it is not worth printing. Here is what separates a free set you will actually use from one that wastes your ink.

Check the resolution first

Anything under 300 dpi will look soft the moment it comes out of the printer, and any small printed wording turns to mush. A 12x12 inch sheet at 300 dpi is 3600 pixels square. If the listing does not say the resolution, assume it is low.

Images saved off Pinterest or a blog post are usually 72 dpi screen resolution. They look fine on a phone and terrible on paper.

Check the licence, properly

Free does not automatically mean you can sell what you make with it. Three levels you will run into:

  • Personal use only - fine for your own journal, not for anything you sell
  • Commercial use - you can sell finished items made with it
  • No resale as-is - almost always attached to the above; you can sell a journal you made, not the digital files

If a set does not state a licence at all, treat it as personal use. Downloading it does not give you rights to it.

Check for white borders

A lot of free papers have a thin white edge baked into the file, usually because they were scanned or exported carelessly. You only notice after printing, when the page will not sit flush against another. Full bleed, edge to edge, is what you want.

Check the spacing on cut-apart sheets

Free ephemera sheets often cram elements together to look generous. If pieces touch or overlap, every cut is a compromise. Clear white space around each element matters more than the number of pieces on the sheet.

Watch for the email wall

Many free sets are behind a mailing list signup. That is a fair trade if the set is good. It is worth having a separate email address for it.

Test one sheet before you print twenty

Print a single page on the paper you intend to use. Check the tone, the sharpness of any printed wording, and whether your printer added a margin. Adjust once, then print the batch.

A checklist

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Licence clearly stated, commercial use if you plan to sell
  • Full bleed, no white border
  • Clear space around cut-out elements
  • Real printed wording, not squiggles
  • Flat lighting, no drawn-on shadows

The free set here is 12 papers, 12x12 at 300 dpi, full bleed, commercial use included, no email required. Worth comparing against anything else you download.
