Making of the SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC APP

Wayne and his family had been brainstorming ideas for an app. Wayne focused on weather apps for his potential app. The first idea was a tornado model he had been working on for some time, however, it was not tornado season. The next season to come about fell into winter. With this in mind, he decided to build a winter almanac app.

Ron, his son, was learning how to build apps. They came together and worked on the app starting around September 2017. At first, it was a slow go but Wayne had figured out a method to make the data handling arrays of the map much easier to build. Ron was learning step by step how to build the main mechanism of an android app. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months while working on the app. Ideas that seemed good at first turned out to be dreadful and a starting point was lost. Finally, after going through many programs Ron settled in on Python Programming and Java.

Google Play Store

The first version was set up using python Programming arrays and a small callup feature. This version worked well! Finally, Ron built the APK (Android Application Package). This APK was needed in order to put the SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC App into the Google Play store.

Google required a twenty-five dollar fee for application into the Google Play Store. They paid the required fee and within 48 hours the SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC was live. Wayne took out advertisements in Alaska out across different portions of the United States. Advertisements were placed as well on Youtube via video… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyzEi_04JmU . A branch of the military or one of their personnel bought the app. This was pretty amazing to Wayne and Ron. The app had no push notifications or any of the fancy features. You just typed in your state and the forecast came up for month-to-month snowfall for your city.

A big push had occurred in orders early on and the app was ranked number 16 across Google Play in the weather department. None of them could believe this was happening that fast. However, just as fast as the orders came they began to slow down as winter moved quickly that year.

December Buffalo New York

The SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC forecast 33.7 inches for Buffalo New York in lake effect snow in December 2017. This was the exact amount of snow that hit Buffalo New York for that month. An amazing weather forecast that has never been accomplished before. Wayne called each weather service office every month to confirm the snowfall reports were accurate to run against the SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC. He found that the SONFIRE WINTER ALMANAC was 81% accurate for snowfall per month.

After the winter season, Wayne contacted many snow plow companies in the greater Buffalo region to get their take on his app. They told him the best way his app could help them was to bring it to street level before the storms. He said that the weather companies could not tell him how much snow would fall on each street before the storm. If he could get that information, it would help him plan ahead, and know what situations he would encounter ahead of the storm.
