If you’ve ever faced the sigh, the flinch, or the “Do we have to?” before hair time — you’re not alone. Detangling textured hair can be stressful for both you and your loved one, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right approach, you can turn detangling into a calm, pain-free process that actually protects the hair instead of damaging it.
Step 1: Start with Slippery, Damp Hair
Never detangle dry hair. Use a spray bottle filled with water or a water-based leave-in to dampen the hair, making it more pliable. Add a generous amount of detangling conditioner or a product with great slip. This creates a barrier that allows your comb or fingers to glide through without snagging.
Step 2: Section and Secure
Divide the hair into small, manageable sections — four to eight for most heads, more if the hair is very thick. Secure each section with clips or bands. Working one section at a time keeps tangles from spreading and makes it easier to focus on each area without overwhelming your little one (or yourself).
Step 3: Start from the Ends, Work Your Way Up
Always begin detangling at the ends of the hair, gently removing knots before moving upward toward the roots. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, and hold the section near the scalp to prevent pulling. If you hit resistance, stop, add more product, and work slowly — forcing it will only cause breakage and tears.
Pro Tip: Regular moisturizing and protective styles between wash days make detangling much easier and faster.
