Jim McNeely

Jim McNeely (1949 - 2025) was a Grammy-winning jazz composer, arranger, pianist, and educator celebrated for his innovative contributions to large ensemble jazz. Mentored by Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and Bob Brookmeyer, he became a leading voice in modern big band writing, collaborating with ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, and many others worldwide. His music is known for its inventive harmony, rhythmic complexity, and emotional depth. Over his distinguished career, McNeely earned twelve Grammy nominations, directed the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, and inspired generations of musicians through his artistry and teaching.
