Many resources teach you how to audit. Few teach you how to thrive as an auditor.

Technical competence gets you through the work, but it's rarely what determines whether you make it in the profession. The long hours, tight deadlines, difficult conversations, the never-ending list of review points can get you down. Whether you can overcome them depends a lot on how you think and respond under pressure. Yet almost nothing written for auditors addresses that honestly.

I spent 18 years in audit, working my way up from assistant to partner. I lived every stage of that journey, from the inexperience of a junior auditor to the responsibility of leading engagement teams, managing a portfolio of clients and signing off audit reports as a partner. That experience taught me exactly where and why auditors get stuck.

What I noticed, year after year, is that capable auditors seldom struggle because they lack technical ability. What holds them back is unhelpful thinking patterns, poor self-regulation, and communication breakdowns, things nobody teaches them to navigate. That's what led me to complete a Master of Social Science (Professional Counselling), so I could better understand how people think under pressure and help them work through what holds them back.

Since 2016, I've also worked as an adult educator. That work taught me something I now build every guide around: real learning isn't about acquiring knowledge. It's about changing how you think to achieve what you want to become.
