How Do You Keep the Same Character in AI Animation?

A little dragon turns his head. The camera moves closer. The forest grows darker.

He should still feel like the little dragon we met a moment ago.

Keeping that sense of recognition is one of the challenges of AI animation — and something I care about as I build ZUVOMIYA.

For me, a recurring character is a relationship with the viewer. We recognise their eyes, their silhouette, and the way they respond to the world. Those details help us care about what happens next.

Start with a clear identity

ZUVOMIYA’s baby dragon has pearlescent cream scales, large amber-green eyes, and luminous golden fins. These details give his design a recognisable foundation.

Before creating a new scene, it helps to decide what must stay the same. Expression, pose, and lighting can change. The features that make the character recognisable need a stable reference.

Use a visual reference

A written description leaves many details open to interpretation. An approved image gives the generation a more specific visual starting point.

Reference images can help preserve a character’s appearance across different settings and camera angles. They do not guarantee a perfect result, so each new shot still needs a careful look.

Give each shot one clear action

A character notices a light. Reaches towards it. Pauses when something unexpected happens.

I want the action in ZUVOMIYA to be easy to follow. Planning one clear action at a time also makes it easier to notice when a gesture, expression, or movement has gone wrong.

Check the connection between shots

Two beautiful images can still feel disconnected.

Does the character look towards the same object? Does the next movement follow naturally? Has something appeared or disappeared without a reason?

A useful check is to place the last frame of one shot beside the first frame of the next. Then watch the transition in motion. Both the design and the action need to make sense.

Keep the personality consistent, too

For ZUVOMIYA, visual continuity is only part of the goal. I also want curiosity, warmth, and small moments of kindness to carry through the stories.

A familiar face helps us recognise a character. A familiar way of responding helps us know them.

That is what I want to build: a world whose characters feel worth meeting again.
