My Slow Morning: Cooking Breakfast in Peace

Peace means everything to me these days.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed how much the noise of the world has softened. The things that once felt urgent, overwhelming, or heavy don’t carry the same weight anymore. Life hasn’t slowed down; I have. And that shift has changed how I experience my days.

At 50, I’m in a new season. My children are grown; in college, married, and beginning families of their own. Watching them step fully into their lives has been beautiful, but it has also shifted my own rhythm. I am no longer needed in the same way, and in that space, I’ve discovered a deeper connection to myself.

In this stage of life, peace, calm, and stillness are not luxuries; they are necessities.

Mornings have become sacred to me.

I love slow mornings; the kind where I don’t rush out of bed or reach for my phone first thing. Instead, I ease into the day, letting my breathing settle and my mind quiet before the world starts calling my name.

One of my favorite ways to begin my day is in my kitchen, cooking breakfast in peace.

On this particular morning, I woke up to a soft blanket of snow covering my backyard. The world outside looked still, quiet, and untouched. I paused at my window for a moment, watching the snow gently rest on the trees before heading into my kitchen. That simple sight set the tone for everything that followed; calm, gentle, and intentional.

Sunlight filtered through my curtains as I moved around my stove. The smell of maple bacon filled the airs; sweet, smoky, and comforting. In one pan, the bacon sizzled slowly. On the griddle, fluffy pancakes began to bubble. In another pan, I whisked eggs with care, watching them turn golden and soft.

There was no rush. No pressure. No feeling that I had to hurry through the moment.

Just me, my kitchen, and the quiet joy of preparing a warm meal while snow rested outside.

As I cooked, I realized something important: peace is not something you wait for; it’s something you create.

You create peace when you choose not to move in chaos.

You create peace when you slow down instead of racing through life.

You create peace when you honor your own rhythm instead of living on everyone else’s clock.

For years, I lived in constant motion; working, raising children, managing responsibilities, and pushing myself to keep up. Now, I am learning to soften into life instead of running through it.

Cooking breakfast that morning became more than just making a meal. It was a reminder that simple moments carry deep meaning. The crackle of bacon, the warmth of the stove, the quiet in my home, and the snow resting outside; all of it nourished my spirit just as much as the food nourished my body.

As I sat down to eat my mea, I felt grounded. Present. Grateful. Centered.

And I thought to myself: this is what peace looks like.

Not perfection.

Not luxury.

Not escaping life.

And if you’re reading this, I want to gently challenge you to create your own slow morning, even if it’s just once a week. Make your coffee with intention. Cook something you love. Look out your window. Sit in silence for a few minutes before the world pulls at you.

Because when you start your day in peace, you carry that peace with you everywhere.

That is how we begin to live, not just survive.
