About the artwork
Adriaen Coorte worked in Middelburg in Zeeland and specialised in small, quiet still lifes on a stone ledge: a few shells, asparagus, or, as here, a bowl heaped with wild strawberries. The dark background and warm reds give this design a rich, painterly glow.
