Mt Vernon/Centerburg - LONG LoST in the Heart of Ohio - Smart-guided Bikeway Tour
LoST in the Heart of Ohio
Smart-guided Bikeway Tour - Centerburg/Mt Vernon
You can do it all, or do half. End to end a beautiful bikeway tour on the Heart of Ohio Trail leading to the iconic Center of Ohio Boulder.
This picturesque tour travels some of the newly completed segments of the Ohio-to-Erie Trail along the Heart of Ohio Trail with a selfie opportunity at the iconic Center of Ohio Boulder. You can go long or short - great for a group of mixed-ability cyclists!
Move this tour to the top of your shortlist if you are looking to get in a long or short bikeway ride through wooded countryside. Here's why - the majority of the route is a rail-to-trail, quite rural, with optional starting spots for a flexible total length. With numerous scenic vistas and railroad history to take in, this memory-making tour often experiences ooh-and-ahh stops along with group and selfie poses.
Most of the tour runs alongside or crosses over picturesque Dry Creek upon the abandoned Cleveland, Akron & Columbus Railroad. With 19 bridges and scenic views through wetlands, woodlands, and farmlands this mostly level trail provides a nice variety of scenery.
The tour features a stop at the CA&C Depot, a beautifully renovated historical train station circa 1907. Along the way is the iconic Center of Ohio Boulder in Memorial Park, marking the geographic center of Ohio. Its being the genuine center is a contested point, but Centerburg has declared itself the Heart of Ohio, has the biggest rock marking the spot, and even has a time capsule beneath it. There are seasonal festivals at the park in June and September, as well as other fun community activities throughout the year.
The Heart of Ohio Trail officially ends three miles further along the trail from Centerburg at a trailhead parking lot at County Line Rd, where it continues to Cincinnati as the Ohio-to-Erie Trail. For the trail purist who must cover every inch of a trail to call it done, that will be the turnaround spot you are looking for. At that point - if seeking bites and beverages - you can continue on six miles to Sunbury where a large assortment of eateries are found, or simply return three miles back to Centerburg to the historic 1834 Midway Tavern or a handful of other eateries.
Your choice - ride 14 or 34 miles. This is a CycleNuts LoST, an acronym for Long or Short Tour. These are CycleNuts group ride favorites because there are two lengths which allows long and short-distance riders to tour together to the same turnaround spot.
GO LONG OR GO SHORT!
2 starting spots - 2 tour lengths - and a CycleNuts-tasted and approved refreshment stop! Rider's choice! 14 or 34 roundtrip miles on beautiful countryside rail-to-trail bikeways. Both routes are shaded most of the way, are 92% bikeway, and have little use for your bike's climbing gears.
How a LoST works. The 14-mile and 34-mile routes start at different locations; travel the same bikeways; allow both groups (long and short - in case your crew is riding along with you) to stop at the same CycleNuts tested and approved tasty spot; turn around at the same point.
