Tokugawa samurai were the warrior class under the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1868) during Japan’s Edo period. Initially trained for warfare, they became administrators, bureaucrats, and law enforcers as Japan enjoyed peace. They were loyal to the Tokugawa family and lived by the Bushido code of honor. Despite the absence of major battles, they maintained order and contributed to culture, including the arts and martial traditions. The samurai's power declined with the Meiji Restoration in 1868, which abolished their status, but their legacy continues to influence Japanese culture today.
