- About Market Capitalization Growth Rates
Market capitalization is one of the most direct indicators that quantifies a company's value as perceived by the market in monetary terms. Therefore, market capitalization growth rates serve as an effective tool for understanding the investment sentiment of the Korean stock market toward specific stocks or industries. When the market capitalization of stocks within the same industry increases overall over a year or a quarter, it reflects the market's positive investment sentiment toward that industry during that period.
- Statistical Methodology and Rationale
The purpose of this statistical analysis is to evaluate the overall market response to stocks within the same industry in the Korean stock market over an annual or quarterly period, using December 30, 2019, as a reference point. Through this, the aim is to understand industry-specific investment sentiment and market trends. Therefore, this statistics analyzes market responses not based on the market capitalization of the industry itself,[1] but on the average growth rates of the market capitalization of stocks within each industry.[2]
When analyzing based on the market capitalization of an industry as a whole, fluctuations in the market capitalization of specific large corporations can distort the perception of overall industry growth. To prevent this, the average market capitalization growth rate of all stocks within the industry is utilized, allowing for a more precise understanding of the market's response to the industry as a whole.
The industry classification in this data is based on the Korean Standard Industrial Classification (KSIC) provided by Statistics Korea, utilizing both the Division level and Group level categories.[3] Statistics based on Division level categories offer a more macroeconomic view of market responses by industry, while those based on Group level categories provide a more detailed view.
