Wondering how to utilise the Australian curriculum without turning home into school? Curious what age-appropriate skills children are working towards in their first year of education? Or looking for simple ideas for how to make sense of the syllabus in the rhythms of everyday life?

I’ve put together an Australian Curriculum Guide for Foundation - the first formal year of schooling. It’s not a program or a plan, but micro-goals aligned to the syllabus that can be achieved in everyday life together.

The goals are based directly on the Australian Curriculum (v.9) for 7 key subjects:

  • MATHS
  • ENGLISH
  • HUMANITIES + SOCIAL SCIENCES (HASS)
  • SCIENCE
  • HEALTH + PHYSICAL EDUCATION (HPE)
  • TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL + DESIGN)
  • VISUAL ARTS

Each goal is worded as a simple “I can...” statement, with a convenient ‘check-box’ for you to tick when it’s achieved. Photographs of children participating in aligned practical learning provides further ideas of what these goals might look like outworked. In addition, the subjects of Maths and English are also supported with hands-on, everyday activities that can be used to teach the learning outcome, alongside online links to helpful resources. The guide also clearly explains key terminology for foundation Maths and English with relevant visual illustrations.
