Unlikely Finisher BACK OF BOOK

What if the moment that defines you… isn’t the one where you succeed — but the one where you dare to begin?

Most people wait until they feel ready.

Until they’re fit enough. Fast enough. Brave enough.

But what if that moment never comes?

In Unlikely Finisher — the powerful follow-up to Sean Kachmarski’s award-winning memoir, Just Finish: Don’t Think You Can, KNOW You Can — the journey deepens. The stakes are higher, the doubts louder, and the lessons more personal than ever before.

This isn’t a story of elite athletes or perfect endings.

It’s a story of grit, grief, and the kind of quiet courage that shows up long after you’ve told yourself to quit.

It’s about confronting your limits — and then redefining what those limits mean.

Told with unfiltered honesty, emotional gut-punches, and just the right amount of swearing, Sean pulls back the curtain on a journey most people never start — not because they’re incapable, but because they’ve convinced themselves they don’t belong.

And yet, step by shaky step, he keeps going.

Whether you're chasing a race, a dream, or the courage to start over, this book will meet you where you are — exhausted, uncertain, but still holding on to hope.

You don’t need to be extraordinary. You just need to begin — and refuse to back down.

If you’ve ever doubted yourself, this book is your wake-up call:

The people who finish aren’t always the fastest… just the ones brave enough to start, and bold enough to rewrite their own limits.

Book Synopsis

Unlikely Finisher is the raw, unfiltered, and unexpectedly uplifting follow-up to my debut memoir, Just Finish. That first book told the story of how I went from a sedentary, middle-aged dad to an ultra-marathon finisher — a journey that surprised even me. But this book dives deeper. It explores what happens after the finish line, when the high fades, the goalposts move, and you’re left asking yourself, “Now what?”

This isn’t a story about elite athleticism or standing on podiums. It’s about facing self-doubt, setbacks, and that constant nagging voice that says you’re in way over your head. My next big challenge? Triathlon — and not just any triathlon. I set my sights on Ironman 70.3 Swansea. I couldn’t swim, had a questionable bike setup, and a whole lot of nerves… and I signed up anyway.

What follows is part training log, part therapy session, and part love letter to the messy, beautiful process of moving your body with purpose. Along the way, there are sprint and Olympic-distance events, some wins, some spectacular failures, and one painfully public DNF that taught me more than any finish ever could.

Told with humour, honesty, and a healthy dose of sarcasm, Unlikely Finisher is for anyone who’s ever doubted themselves, hit a wall, or wondered if they’re too old, too slow, or too far gone to try something new. It’s not just about finishing — it’s about daring to begin in the first place.
