In Mazurka (2022), my deep admiration and long study of Scriabin and Chopin converge in a new work that breathes life into the hallowed mazurka form—a form I have explored both at the keyboard and through analytical study.

Commissioned by and dedicated to the outstanding Anna Kijanowska, with support from WPTA Poland and the University of Silesia, the piece stands as a testament to the lasting influence these composers continue to have on my musical voice.

As a genre steeped in tradition and defined by its distinctive rhythm, the mazurka provides the canvas for a series of aural reflections shaped by my intimate connection with the works of these piano masters. Within its familiar framework, the dance is reimagined—its gestures unfolding through improvisatory lines and dreamlike harmonies that recall Scriabin’s mysticism and Chopin’s poetic subtlety.

Structured as a condensed rondo, Mazurka invites the pianist on a journey through a sound world that feels at once deeply familiar and boldly original. My love for the nuanced color palettes of Scriabin and Chopin has given rise to a work that is not simply a tribute, but a personal narrative—continuing the evolution of the mazurka and inviting listeners to experience this historic dance through a contemporary lens.
