SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN: CAPTAIN HARRY GULEKE - CELEBRATED RIVER OF NO RETURN PILOT
This 136 page book, published 05 May 2023, in 8.5" x 11" format, with 100 photographs, ISBN: 979-8-9880431-2-6, is devoted to Captain Henry "Harry" Guleke [pronounced Goo-lek-ey] who was an extremely successful and celebrated flat-boat operator from 1897 until 1933 and who made Idaho's Salmon river - the River of No Return - internationally famous. That press coverage contributed a great deal to the economy of Lemhi county, Idaho through tourism and gave Salmon river worldwide notoriety as a wild and scenic river. Aside from his river activities he also farmed and mined.
In researching for my volumes of history covering the area of the Salmon river between North Fork and Horse creek I encountered many published works and websites which all parroted the same incorrect information about Guleke sourced from the egregious 1978 River Of No Return, by John Carrey & Cort Conley. Since no one else has seemingly ever researched the life of this celebrated person and his remarkable career, I felt that I could honor him by providing some truthful, researched facts and by detailing his voyages between Salmon City and Riggins, 1901 to 1933, which numbered somewhere between 85 and 115.
Volume 2 of my book This Wonderful Country - Along Idaho's River of No Return from North Fork to Horse Creek has a lengthy chapter on the history of navigation on Salmon river, 1832-1943, but due to the enormity of source material I located concerning Guleke it became apparent that he merited a book of his own.
Guleke, a native of upstate New York, came to Lemhi county, Idaho about 1893. Taught by the celebrated Salmon river flat-boat pilot Captain George Sandilands, and likely his brother David Sandilands, Guleke began freighting on his own in 1897 and continued to do so until 1933. He became the first documented person to navigate the Salmon from Salmon City to Riggins while onboard a flat-boat in the spring of 1901.
While Guleke was only one among many, many river pilots, and came on the scene long after flat-boats first began running the Salmon in 1883, he became the most famous for the longevity of his career and for the international publicity he received.
Over time Guleke's venue changed from supplying mining camps and isolated settlers to hosting hunters, thrill seekers and wealthy tourists on the “wildest boat ride in America."
This book contains thrilling descriptions of voyages made down the Salmon on a year-by-year basis, written by news reporters, Guleke's paying guests and by famous writers of outdoor oriented magazines. They poignantly describe the sheer ruggedness and unspoiled beauty of the Salmon river corridor, the wildlife and incredible fishing, the close calls, the capsized boats and the terrific collisions with rocks.
The title references a statement made by Guleke to a panicked passenger who contemplated jumping ship just below Camp Shoup while shooting Pine creek rapids.
This is a digital book, or Epub, readable on any device such as phone, tablet, laptop etc. It is not, however, readable on Kindle yet.
The process is pretty simple:
1. download an Epub reader to your device - you need an Epub reader app to be able to read electronic books. Two free readers that I recommend are ReadEra from Google Play Store or Calibre, which can be down loaded here: https://calibre-ebook.com/
2. Download the product to your device. It will automatically be added to the "library list" in your Epub reader
Please note that there is no "hard copy" version of this book available. If you require a hard copy, download Calibre, mentioned above, which will allow you to convert the ePub to PDF format which you can then print.
