IN PAUL’S DEFENSE – In My Defense by Bro H

All rise. The People versus Paul of Tarsus: False apostle, another gospel, Enemy of the law, Thief of Israel’s promises. [Gavel] [Judge] Let the evidence be heard. Prosecution—proceed. [Prosecution] You call yourself a Judaean; We say that makes you a Jew— A Pharisee, an infiltrator. Tell this court: who are you? [Paul replies] “Has God cast away His people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, Of the seed of Abraham, Of the tribe of Benjamin.” “Circumcised the eighth day, Of the stock of Israel— Not of the sons of Esau, But a Hebrew of the Hebrews.” [Chorus] “Men, brethren, and fathers, Hear my defense Which I make now unto you.” “I stand and am judged For the hope of the promise Made of God unto our fathers— Unto which promise Our twelve tribes Hope to come.” For this hope’s sake I stand accused— Now hear the evidence. [Prosecution] No witnesses stood beside you When the light struck you down. No two men heard your calling; No apostle gave you ground. [Ananias] “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, Who appeared unto you in the way, Has sent me, That you might receive your sight And be filled with the Holy Spirit.” [Voice of Christ] “He is a chosen vessel unto Me, To bear My name before nations and kings And the children of Israel.” [Peter] “The day of the Lord will come As a thief in the night; The heavens shall pass with a great noise, The elements shall melt with fervent heat.” “Our beloved brother Paul, According to the wisdom given unto him, Has written in all his epistles Things hard to be understood, Which the unlearned and unstable wrest, As they do the other Scriptures, Unto their own destruction.” [Prosecution] Objection! [Judge] Overruled. [Prosecution] You made the law void through faith! You called rebellion liberty! [Paul replies] “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid! Yea, we establish the law.” “The law is holy, And the commandment holy, And just, and good.” “Circumcision is nothing, And uncircumcision is nothing, But the keeping of the commandments of God.” [Prosecution] Then grace lets sinners Continue as before! [Paul replies] “Shall we continue in sin, That grace may abound? God forbid!” The commandments were not taken; The blood ordinances ceased. “Christ our Passover Is sacrificed for us.” “Where remission of these is, There is no more offering for sin.” [Prosecution] You went unto the Gentiles, To every race beneath the sun! You broke the bounds Christ gave the Twelve And made the many into one! [Paul replies] “My brethren, My kinsmen according to the flesh, Who are Israelites; To whom pertain the adoption, The covenants, the giving of the law, And the promises.” Our twelve tribes still hope to come— The scattered sheep of Israel, Still living among the nations. [Prosecution] You called it “my gospel”— Your message and command! [Paul replies] “Whether it were I or they, So we preach, And so you believed.” “For I delivered unto you That which I also received: Christ died for our sins According to the Scriptures; He was buried, And rose the third day According to the Scriptures.” Not another gospel— That which I received. [Prosecution] You confessed you were lying So God’s truth would gain applause! [Paul replies] “As we are slanderously reported, And as some affirm that we say, Let us do evil, that good may come— Whose condemnation is just.” You quoted the accusation And called the charge a lie. You pulled one question from the record And concealed my own reply. [Paul — Closing] “Let a man account of us As ministers of Christ, And stewards of the mysteries of God. It is required in stewards That a man be found faithful.” I planted, Apollos watered, But God gave the increase. I was not crucified for you; You were not baptized in my name. I preached Christ risen, The Kingdom and commandments, The covenants and promises Made unto our fathers. [Judge] The charges have been heard. What say you? [Jury] Chosen vessel— The testimony stands. Beloved brother— Wisdom in his hands. The law established, The offering complete; The steward proved faithful, The evidence speaks. [Final Chorus] “Men, brethren, and fathers, Hear my defense Which I make now unto you.” “I stand and am judged For the hope of the promise Made of God unto our fathers— Unto which promise Our twelve tribes Hope to come.” The evidence speaks. The slander falls. The steward answered Every call. [Bailiff] If the Gospel fits— You must acquit. [Gavel] “Let brotherly love continue.”
