This March Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with sentence writing practice for K to 2 students. On each page, students draw a March picture, trace and write the word, trace and write a simple sentence, and then write their own sentence using the word.

Drawing first gives young writers something real to talk and write about. The drawings follow March and spring themes: shamrock, leprechaun, flower, boot, umbrella, rainbow, pot of gold, kite, daffodil, tulip, robin, nest, syrup, worm, bicycle, seed, flower pot, sunglasses, ladybug, caterpillar, lamb, cherry blossom, rabbit, clover and horse shoe. The directed drawings are created by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic).

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for morning work, daily writing practice, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans or homeschool writing practice, including St. Patrick's Day and spring writing. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a March write and draw booklet that students work through over time.

Every page follows the same format of directed drawing, word tracing, sentence tracing and independent sentence writing, so students get repeated practice and know what to expect. It suits visual learners and reluctant writers especially well, because the drawing gives them a starting point before the writing.

FAQ

Who is this for?

Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with K to 2 students.

What kind of writing does it support?

Sentence writing. Students trace and write a themed word, trace and write a simple sentence, and write their own sentence using the word.

How long does each page take?

It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. One page may fit in one class or writing block, and students who color carefully may take longer.

Is it editable?

No. It is a non-editable PDF.

Do students need to be strong artists?

No. The directed drawing steps are there to help students feel successful, and they can add their own creative details before writing.
