Composed in 1928 by Nicanor Abelardo, Madaling Araw (“Daybreak”) is one of the finest examples of the kundiman art song. Known as the “Father of the Kundiman Art Song,” Abelardo elevated the genre with sophisticated harmonies and expressive melodies that bridged Western classical traditions with deeply Filipino sentiment.

The song’s text and music capture the poignancy of longing and hope at the break of dawn—a time that symbolizes both sorrow and renewal. Its sweeping lines and heartfelt emotion have made it a favorite among vocalists and ensembles, solidifying Abelardo’s legacy as a central figure in Philippine music history.
