Workshop One: Getting to Know Diamond Bits
A starting point for your stone carving journey
A starting point for your stone carving journey
This workshop is for beginners and hobbyists who want to get comfortable using diamond bits on rocks.
Maybe you already have a rotary tool but aren’t sure where to start, or you’re still deciding which one to buy. You might feel overwhelmed by all the diamond bits or unsure how to set up your work area.
By the end of this workshop, you’ll know how to choose a rotary tool, set up your carving area with continuous water flow, and use 10 beginner-friendly diamond bits, plus one bonus bit, to carve grooves, shape edges, and smooth areas of a rock. You’ll understand which bit to reach for and have a clear starting point for practicing on your own. No carving experience is needed!
Hi, we’re Sam and Brandon, the husband-and-wife team behind RockYouWear! Our story started with a rock, a Dremel, and the curiosity to see what we could make.
Brandon has spent more than 15 years turning rocks jewelry. He’s usually at the workbench, while Sam is behind the camera, sharing what he’s making and chatting with you on social media.
After years of hearing “How do you do that?” we decided to share what we’ve learned. We’re artists first and teachers second, so this workshop is based on what works for us, explained one bit at a time. We hope it helps you feel ready to give rock carving a try.
A guide to tools, workspace setup, safety, diamond bits, and practice, with links to tools and supplies. Read it on your device or print a copy.
11 short videos showing 10 featured bits plus a bonus bit at work on rocks, from removing larger amounts of material to smoothing and detail work. Pause and replay whenever you need.
A printable quick reference to all 11 bit shapes and their uses. Keep it beside you to help choose a bit while you practice.
What we share is based on our own experience carving rocks. Tools, rocks, and approaches vary, so your experience and results may be different from ours.
