The fifth volume of Flesh and Parchment, The Secret Garden, turns toward the hidden — the places we cultivate quietly, the things that grow without permission, and the private worlds that exist just beyond the garden gate. A garden is never simply a garden. It is a place of cultivation, decay, enclosure, escape, desire, and transformation. It is somewhere things are planted, tended, neglected, uprooted, and allowed to grow wild.

Across these pages, the garden takes many forms: overgrown paths and forbidden rooms, flowers blooming through cracks in concrete, tangled roots, poisonous plants, childhood hiding places, imagined landscapes, and the small secret ecosystems we carry within ourselves. The Secret Garden lingers in the spaces between wild and cultivated, beautiful and dangerous, familiar and strange.

This issue gathers poetry, essays, visual works, and experimental pieces that explore gardens as both physical places and metaphors for the hidden. These are works about growth and decay, nature and nurture, secrecy and discovery, desire and belonging. Together, they ask what we choose to cultivate, what we leave to grow wild, and what might be waiting for us behind the gate.
