Mackerel Point is bringing back the Pirate Duck Passage, this time with environmental permits, contained racing ducks, and enough sponsor paperwork to make the original disaster look almost spontaneous. Mayor Hot👖 sees a chance to turn the town’s most notorious embarrassment into a respectable attraction. Jude Tuck sees an unauthorized twelve-foot banner of Captain Dumb🍑 and a contract promising commercial access to a cat nobody owns.

Then compliance auditor Vern Sorrell is found dead aboard the festival sightseeing launch—wearing the mayor’s missing coral trousers.

The mayor argued with Vern in public. He concealed an embarrassing Captain-licensing clause. He also waited far too long to admit that his trousers had vanished from a volunteer repair table. By the time Detective Maureen Pike begins separating homicide evidence from civic humiliation, Mackerel Point has already written the simpler story.

Jude’s job is narrower and considerably less marketable: protect the museum’s borrowed artifacts, track document versions, and report what people and objects actually did. The trail runs through fish oil, phosphorescent race paint, teal repair thread, a costume belt with an alibi problem, counterfeit Captain merchandise, and two clocks that cannot both be right. Behind the festival’s cheerful disorder, somebody has been using competence, access, and everybody else’s trust to keep far more than a race on schedule.

Captain Dumb🍑 and the Hot👖 Homicide is a funny, fair-play coastal cozy mystery about authority, image rights, public stories, and the dangerous assumption that temporary possession equals permission.

The murder is solved in this book. The larger Captain File mystery continues with a carefully limited photograph from the town’s original pirate-duck disaster.
