Bacterialstatic water

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile, purified water mixed with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which acts as a preservative to stop bacteria from growing inside the vial. 

Main Uses

• Reconstituting medications: It is used to dissolve freeze-dried (lyophilized) powders into a liquid form before injection.
• Diluting drugs: It acts as a solvent to lower the concentration of injectable drugs like hormones, peptides, and certain antibiotics.
• Multi-dose vials: Because the benzyl alcohol prevents bacterial growth, a single vial can be punctured multiple times with different sterile needles over a period of up to 28 days. 

Key Differences from Regular Sterile Water

• Plain sterile water: Contains no preservatives and must be thrown away immediately after a single use.
• Bacteriostatic water: Can be reused for multiple withdrawals over several weeks, reducing waste in clinical or research settings.
