Berlin History Hunt. A 52 page investigation for ages 11 to 13, and the book I'd hand my own history kid first.

Six stops across Berlin, and each one is a case. The Nikolaiviertel, where two medieval towns, Berlin and Cölln, grew on either side of the Spree and joined up in 1307. The Nikolaikirche, with fieldstone from an earlier church still in its towers and a brick Gothic hall from around 1400. The Reichstag, opened in 1894, a republic proclaimed from it in 1918, a fire in 1933, and a parliament back inside it in 1999. The Brandenburg Gate, built for a king, damaged in the war, stuck inside the border zone, and open again on 22 December 1989. Siemensstadt, a whole district built for work from the 1890s. And Bernauer Strasse at the Berlin Wall Memorial, where one street ended up under two authorities from 1961 to 1989.

At every stop your kid reads the real history in two solid paragraphs, steps into a flashback, then does the investigator's job. Notice. Compare. Decode. Sketch. Gather evidence. Our family is on the page doing the same thing, so it reads like joining an adventure, not a textbook.

The whole book runs on GRAPES. Geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics, social structure. It's the way I taught the ancient world for eight years and it's the way I still walk through a city. Once a kid has it, they can't unsee it.

WHAT'S INSIDEInvestigator file and a words to know page (evidence, inference, primary source, corroboration)A timeline from Berlin and Cölln in 1237 to the border opening in 1989Six stops, each with the story, a flashback, evidence pages and a crew challengeAn evidence gallery, a travel diary page and a question still openThe Berlin City Sleuth certificate at the end. My kids will do a lot for a certificate.

A note for parents. Some of the stops involve unequal power, conflict and loss, the Nazi seizure of power at the Reichstag and the Wall that divided families. The book leaves room for honest questions and a pause. That's on purpose.

WHO MADE THISI'm Nicole, an ASTA Verified Travel Advisor with FG Luxury Travel, and I plan international family trips for a living. Adventures We Seek is my travel blog and planning resource, and trips are booked through Favorite Grampy Travels. Before that I taught social studies for eight years.

In May 2026 we sold our house and moved abroad with our three kids and the dog, so we are going country to country right now with one hiking bag each, no suitcases. Every book in this library has our family in it. Gavin, Jake, Avilene, Adam, me and Poppy the dog, who is quite sure she is a person.
